Earth Day!

While we should be thinking of the Earth every day, I love that April 22nd gives us a chance to really focus on our home planet!

I'm letting you in on a little {embarrassing} secret. Back when I first started teaching, I was HORRIBLE at recycling in my classroom. I mean, such a super simple thing and I was not setting a good example for my students.

Fast forward many years later and I'm proud to say that we not only recycle, but we also compost too! We read TONS of great books and do lots of exciting activities to remind students about our amazing planet!

Keep reading to learn more about my favorite activities, books, videos, and songs all about Earth Day! Oh, and there's a freebie down at the bottom ๐Ÿ™‚

Earth Day Craftivity

Seriously, how fun is this Earth Day craftivity?! After reading your favorite Earth Day book, encourage your students to write or draw about how they can help the Earth. This makes such a fun Earth Day bulletin board display, too.

Hands-On Earth Day Activities

You know I can't get enough of Snap Cube and Pattern Block mats! So of course I have a version for Earth Day!

These Earth Day Snap Cube mats help your students build fine motor, geometry and following directions. Then, after they've built the matching snap cubes, students count the number of cubes used and fill out the book to determine one more, one less, ten more, and ten less. The best part? Kids don't even realize they are working on all these important skills!

Another awesome activity for building skills are these Earth Day Pattern Block Mats. Just as with the snap cubes, students fill out a mini book after they've built the image with pattern blocks.

Earth Day Books

Picking a favorite book is like picking your favorite dessert! How does one do it? These are some of my favorite Earth Day books that we read in the days around Earth Day.

Children of the Earth…Remember is a beautifully illustrated book that gives children a very real idea of what's happening to our planet.

I love this book, What if Everybody Did That? As we know, young children tend to be a little egocentric ๐Ÿ™‚ They can't help it – it's developmental. BUT…we can try to share different perspectives. This book does an excellent job of showing kids how what they do has an impact on the Earth.

The Last Straw was recently published and it is SO awesome! It shares practical, everyday changes that kiddos {and us adults!} can make that will help our beloved Earth.

Earth Day Videos

Of course our kids love a good video! Share the Earth Day excitement with these amazing YouTube videos.

This Jack Johnson song all about recycling is SO catchy that I promise you'll be singing it throughout the day ๐Ÿ™‚

This next catchy Earth Day song goes into all the different items that can be recycled. It's a great conversation starter {and a reminder!} for what can be recycled!

Who doesn't love Harry Kindergarten? This catchy song shares super simple ideas kids can pitch in with to help take care of the Earth.

And no primary lesson is complete without a Jack Hartmann song, right? This catchy tune will remind your students all about the importance of recycling on Earth Day…and every day!
