If you’ve ever had a student ask, “What’s a veteran?” you know just how tricky it can be to explain big topics in kid-sized ways. Veterans Day is one of those important holidays that can feel a little overwhelming to teach in kindergarten, first, or second grade. But here’s the thing – it matters. And with just a few simple activities and read-alouds, it’s completely doable in primary classrooms.

In fact, Veterans Day offers a wonderful opportunity to plant seeds of gratitude, respect, and good citizenship in even our little people!

Read on for a few simple ways you can make this important holiday part of your classroom learning.

Why It’s Worth Teaching in K-2

You might wonder, “Is Veterans Day really necessary in the primary grades?” The short answer is yes. While young kids may not fully grasp the concept of military service, they can absolutely begin to understand and appreciate ideas like community, bravery, and sacrifice.

Teaching Veterans Day:

Builds empathy and gratitude

Introduces the concept of service and helping others

Supports character education and classroom community building

Helps students see veterans as real people in their neighborhoods, not just figures in history

It’s not about diving into difficult topics. It’s about introducing values that will grow with them.

Use Picture Books

We all know that books are one of the easiest and most effective ways to teach about Veterans Day. A well-chosen read-aloud opens the door to meaningful conversation while keeping things age-appropriate.

Here are a few classroom favorites:

Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin

After reading, ask students how the story made them feel, what they learned about veterans, or why saying thank you is important. You can extend the lesson with a quick writing prompt or drawing.

Create Opportunities for Gratitude

Write Notes!

Once students understand what a veteran is, give them a way to show their appreciation. One of the most meaningful activities you can do is have your students create thank-you cards for veterans.

This simple act helps students practice empathy and kindness {and sneaking in a lil’ writing at the same time!}

You can send the cards to a local VA hospital, community center, or even a family member who has served. If you need a no-prep option, I have a ready-to-print Veterans Day card activity in the November Class Books that makes it easy to implement right away.

Create a Class Book!

You can also highlight everyday heroes {in the military or not!} creating a fun class book. You can also find this template inside of the November Class Books pack.

Keep It Age-Appropriate Yet Meaningful

Remember, the goal isn’t to explain war or complex military topics. The focus is on service, community, and gratitude. Keep the tone positive and kid-friendly.

These YouTube videos are short and age-appropriate!

Teaching young students about the importance of voting may seem like a big concept, but introducing it early helps build responsible future citizens.
In this post, I’m sharing some excellent books you can use in your classroom to open up conversations about voting, democracy, choices, and fairness. These books make the complex idea of voting easy to understand and fun for young minds!

Make sure to preview whatever book you select from the bookstore or the library to ensure it works for your specific age group and students.

Some of these books include more advanced concepts, while others are simple stories geared toward younger students.

Presidential Elections and Other Cool Facts

I love reading The Questioneers series of books and Sofia Valdez, Future Prez does not disappoint. It illustrates to children the importance of standing up for what they believe in…and how it can make a difference.

Using books to introduce the topic of voting makes it accessible and relatable for young learners. By helping students understand that their voice matters, we are raising future citizens who value their role in democracy.

There are so many things that fascinate me about young little people – one of which is that they have a very hard time seeing beyond their little world! But as teachers, we know how important it is to expand our students’ minds and help them understand that there’s a vast world beyond their classroom and home walls.

One of my favorite ways to do this is through our annual Postcard Project. This project encourages students to connect with family, friends, and people from all over the world by collecting postcards, which become windows into different cultures, locations, and environments.

What is the Postcard Project?

The idea behind the Postcard Project is simple yet powerful. Each year, I ask my students’ families to reach out to their friends and family, requesting that they send a postcard to our classroom. These postcards can come from anywhere — their hometown, a travel destination, or even a local tourist spot. The main goal is to give students a tangible way to explore geography, culture, and the uniqueness of other places.

How the Postcard Project Works

Introducing the Project

I start by explaining to the students what a postcard is {you’d be surprised at how many haven’t seen one before!} and how it can be a snapshot of a place. We talk about different locations, climates, and landmarks they might see on postcards.

Writing the Request

We draft letters together, asking family and friends to participate in the project. We practice writing skills while making sure to include details like our classroom address, a polite request for postcards, and an explanation of why we’re doing the project.

If you’d prefer to skip this step, you can simply send home a generic letter like the one below for students to share {keep reading and I’ll even share the template freebie!}

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="940" height="780" src="https://mollylynch.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Write-Letters-to-People-asking-for-Postcards-to-Be-sent-by-Lucky-Learning-with-Molly-Lynch-.jpg" alt="A letter outlining The Postcard Project, a classroom initiative requesting postcards with information on famous landmarks, culture, capital cities, celebrations, and more.
Receiving the Postcards

Once the postcards start arriving, the excitement in the room is contagious!

Each time we get a new card, we read it aloud, look at the picture, and talk about the place it came from and discuss any new information we’ve learned from the sender about the special place.

We locate this place on a map and discuss its special features. I give my students a copy of a world map and US map {the freebie also includes a Canadian map} Students then color the corresponding place on his/her map to note that we’ve received a postcard from that part of the world.

Displaying the Postcards

We dedicate a bulletin board or wall space to display the postcards. It becomes a colorful and diverse representation of the world!

I suggest purchasing a large laminated world map and “push pin” stickers {which can be removed since the map is laminated}

Why The Postcard Project is Perfect for 1st and 2nd Graders

At this age, students often have trouble understanding that there is a great big world beyond their little world. The Postcard Project taps into their sense of wonder and excitement about the world around them. Here are a few benefits of the Postcard Project:

Real-world connections: Students learn that the world is much bigger than their immediate surroundings, which helps foster global awareness.

Geography skills: The project reinforces map skills as we locate where each postcard comes from.

Cultural appreciation: Students gain exposure to different traditions, landmarks, and ways of life.

Writing practice: The letter-writing aspect of the project allows students to practice their writing in a meaningful way.

Tips for Teachers

Start early: Reach out to parents at the beginning of the school year to give them plenty of time to gather postcards.

Use social media: Encourage parents to share your request on their own social media, expanding the reach and increasing the chances of postcards from more distant locations.

Incorporate technology: If you want to expand beyond physical postcards, consider accepting digital postcards via email. This can open the door to receiving cards from even more unique locations {and quicker!}

I bought these stacking bowls at Ikea and used my Cricut to create the labels. We sing Dr. Jean’s World Family song every day for a couple of weeks to familiarize them with where exactly they live!

Everything is easier to learn through songs, right? I can guarantee that once you play these songs for your students, they will be stuck in your head. Sorry in advance!

When I was in 2nd Grade, my teacher had the coolest Geosafri Education Learning Thing {not sure that was the official name though} Keep in mind this was long before tablets ever existed so this was peak tech in the 90s!
Driving around with my son recently, we started to have a conversation about Wants and Needs. Now, to a five-year-old boy, it can be a tad tricky trying to explain the distinction between these ideas! Getting that new stuffy is a NEED {or so he says!} not just a want!

While we may think that Wants vs Needs is just another Social Studies concept to tick off in our plans, it’s actually crucial for developing financial literacy, empathy, and decision-making skills as our students grow up.

First, Define

Start the discussion in your classroom by defining wants and needs in the simplest terms.

Needs are things we must have to live and stay healthy, like food, water, shelter, and clothing.

Wants, on the other hand, are things we would like to have but don’t need to survive, such as toys, video games, or candy.

Hang up the definitions for students to see.

Books About Wants vs Needs

There are some great picture books to use with your class to drive home this concept.

I recently added Wants vs. Needs vs. Robots to my classroom library. Students LOVE these robots {we also have the Facts vs. Opinions vs. Robots, too!}

Cloverleaf Books are a wonderful series of fictional books that teach important life skills and lessons. Lily Learns about Wants and Needs is a perfect introduction to this concept.

Need it or Want It? is a simple non-fiction book about this skill. Real pictures make the concepts very clear for young learners.

Brain Pop Jr.

Annie and Moby always do a great job explaining challenging concepts in simple-to-understand terms for young kids. This lesson has extension activities, too!

A Simple Video

Start with the Basics: Maps and Globes

Begin your geography journey by introducing your students to maps and globes. Show them the difference between maps {flat representations of the Earth’s surface} and globes {3D models of the Earth}.

This is a super catchy song to introduce a lot of the important language related to maps and globes.

You can begin to discuss how to identify continents and oceans on a globe and help them understand the concepts of North, South, East, and West.

My favorite song to teach about the directions is below. I learned it 100 years ago and honestly do not know the original source! But go ahead and click on the picture below to grab a copy for your own classroom! It’ll download straight to your computer.

Need a little more practice with beginning map skills? I actually wrote two books on geography! Go check ’em out!

There’s a book for Kindergarten geography skills

And a book for 1st Grade geography skills!

Explore the Seven Continents

Once your students grasp the basics, it’s time to dive into the 7 continents. Hang up a colorful map of the world or better yet…have students color their own maps!

You can grab a class set of these maps and color the continents as you teach about each one.

I love using these color-your-own maps because it gives you a chance to chat about important things found on a map – a compass rose, a map key, and more! Once you introduce the concept, your students will see it in use right away!

Discover Oceans and Seas

Of course, another catchy tune will help your students learn about the 5 oceans!

Make Geography Personal

To make geography more relatable to the unique students in your room, encourage your students to connect it to their own lives. Ask them to share their family heritage and find those countries on a map. Do they have family living in another part of the country or world? Find it on the map!

Share stories of your own travels or invite guest speakers if possible. It can be parents or even some of your own friends! This personal connection can ignite their curiosity and make geography feel more meaningful!

A few years ago I had a student who traveled a lot {because of her dad’s job} She would always make a fun Shutterfly book of photos and bring it into the classroom to share. I loved the conversations that sparked from seeing something cool in a photo!

Travel to the 7 Continents

Each continent is so unique! Take your students on a trip around the world through games, activities, and more! Read more about how I do this in my first grade here!

Teaching geography is not just about maps and locations; it’s also an opportunity to introduce the concept of cultural diversity.

Explore the traditions, foods, and clothing of different countries as you learn about their locations. Encourage students to appreciate and respect the differences among cultures, fostering a sense of global citizenship.

Use Digital Resources

Since traveling around the world is not an option, bring the beauty of the continents to your students! These digital PowerPoint {and Google!} presentations will open your students to a world beyond the four walls of your classroom.
