Have you ever explained an activity several times only to hear, “What are we supposed to do again?” five seconds later? 🙄

If you teach young children, you probably experience this almost daily!

I think all teachers are noticing that students are struggling more than ever with listening carefully, following multi-step directions, and staying focused during independent work. Even students who are bright and capable sometimes have difficulty remembering simple instructions or completing tasks without repeated reminders.

The good news is that following directions is a skill that can be practiced and strengthened over time.

Just like reading fluency or math fact fluency, listening skills improve with consistent exposure and meaningful practice. And now more than ever, we need to put just as much effort into practicing following directions as we do other important skills!

Why Students Struggle With Following Directions

Today’s students are growing up in a fast-paced world filled with constant distractions. How can we compete with the excitement of Roblox or video games? Many children are used to quick entertainment, short videos, and rapid transitions between activities. Sitting still and listening carefully for multiple directions can be challenging for those used to fast-paced graphics, loud sounds, and a constantly changing background!

In the classroom, this often shows up in small ways.

Students may begin working before all directions are given. They may skip important details. Some children become overwhelmed by multi-step tasks and immediately ask for help before even trying to do it independently.

This can become frustrating for both teachers and students.

When students struggle to follow directions, classroom routines become harder to manage. Simple activities take longer than expected. Teachers end up repeating themselves throughout the day, which can feel exhausting.

The encouraging part is that these skills can absolutely improve with intentional practice.

Listening Skills Affect More Than Classroom Behavior

Following directions is connected to so many important academic skills.

Students use listening skills during reading lessons, math instruction, centers, science experiments, classroom discussions, and small group activities. Even completing a worksheet successfully often requires children to carefully listen and process information.

Strong listening skills also help students become more independent learners {which is our ultimate goal, right?!}

Children who can follow directions confidently are often able to start tasks on their own, complete activities successfully, and participate more fully in classroom routines. This independence builds confidence and reduces frustration.

For younger learners, especially, practicing listening skills early can make a huge difference throughout the school year.

Why Listen-and-Color Activities Work So Well

One of my favorite ways to practice following directions in the classroom is through listen-and-color activities.

These activities feel fun and engaging for students, but they also provide meaningful listening practice at the same time.

Because students are actively coloring, circling, or drawing while listening, they tend to stay more focused on the directions being given. The visual component helps keep children engaged longer than traditional listening exercises.

Students also love the challenge of making sure their picture matches the directions correctly.

Without even realizing it, they are practicing:

careful listening

attention to detail

visual discrimination

fine motor skills

patience

independent work habits

The best part is that these activities feel low-pressure and enjoyable for young learners.

Many students view them as a game instead of academic practice! Love when that happens, right?!

Easy Ways to Build Listening Skills Every Day

Listening practice does not have to take a large block of instructional time.

In fact, short and consistent practice is often the most effective approach.

Following directions activities work wonderfully during morning work, literacy centers, indoor recess, fast finisher time, or even as part of your seasonal classroom routines. They are also perfect to keep on hand for substitute plans because students can complete them independently once they understand the format.

I especially love using seasonal activities throughout the year because the changing themes keep students interested.

A pumpkin activity in October feels exciting and fresh. Snowman-themed pages during winter instantly increase engagement. Spring and end-of-year themes help maintain interest later in the school year when attention spans can become even shorter.

Simple seasonal changes can make a huge difference in student motivation.

A Low-Prep Way to Practice Important Skills

As teachers, we are constantly trying to balance meaningful instruction with realistic prep time.

That is one reason I love using seasonal following directions coloring activities in my own classroom. They are easy to prep, engaging for students, and flexible enough to use in multiple ways throughout the week.

These types of activities allow students to strengthen listening comprehension while also giving teachers a manageable classroom routine that works all year long.

Whether you use them during centers, morning work, small groups, or independent practice, they provide students with an opportunity to slow down, listen carefully, and focus on details in a fun and approachable way.

Sometimes the smallest classroom routines can have the biggest impact.

Practicing listening skills consistently helps students become more confident, independent, and successful throughout the school day. Even a few minutes of intentional listening practice can help children improve their focus and ability to follow directions over time.

And when those activities are engaging, seasonal, and easy to prep, everybody wins.

If you’ve ever looked around your classroom the week before any holiday and thought, “How am I going to get through this week?”… you’re not alone.

The excitement is real. Schedules are off. Students are buzzing. And somehow, you’re still expected to keep learning going while managing all that energy.

After years in the classroom, I’ve learned one thing: holidays are not the time to try something complicated.

We know that kids {and teachers!} love simple, predictable, low-prep activities that keep your students engaged and help your day run smoothly.

Let’s talk about what actually works.

Stick to Predictable Routines {Even During Holiday Excitement}

It’s tempting to throw out your schedule during holiday weeks—but honestly, that’s when your routines matter the most.

Students thrive on knowing what comes next, especially when everything else feels exciting and different.

A few ways to keep things consistent:

Start your day with your usual morning work or soft start

Keep your literacy and math blocks structured (even if activities are themed)

Build in quiet work time each day

Simple routines = fewer behavior issues.

You don’t need a brand-new plan. You just need to adjust what you’re already doing.

Low-Prep Holiday Activities That Actually Work

When your energy is low and your time is limited, you need activities that are easy to implement but still meaningful.

Here are a few go-to ideas:

Read-aloud + quick response
Read a holiday-themed book, then have students draw or write a short response

Seasonal Math Fact games
Partner games that review skills you’ve already taught

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2000" height="2000" src="https://mollylynch.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Writing-Topics-for-Primary-Writers-by-Lucky-Learning-with-Molly-Lynch-3.jpg" alt="A cup labeled "Writing Ideas for First Grade!" holds prompt cards; in front, a card reads, "This rabbit shows up on your doorstep.
The key here is keeping things simple and familiar—not adding more to your plate.

The Power of Independent Activities

One of the biggest challenges during holiday weeks?
Students working at different speeds… and needing constant help.

That’s why independent activities are a lifesaver.

When students can work on something without needing step-by-step directions, it gives you:

Time to support small groups

A solution for early finishers

A calmer, more focused classroom

Even having just one reliable independent activity each day can make a huge difference.

A Go-To Solution for Busy Holiday Weeks

Over time, I realized I needed something I could grab quickly—something my students enjoyed but didn’t require prep, explanation, or management.

That’s exactly why I started using mini holiday activity books in my classroom.

They’ve become one of my favorite tools during busy weeks because they:

Require zero prep

Keep students engaged and on-task

Work for centers, early finishers, or quiet time

Help bring a sense of calm to the day

I’ll often pass them out after recess, during a transition, or when I need a reset moment. My students love them, and I love how easy they make my day feel.

If you’re looking for something you can use right away, you can check out my Mini Holiday Books—they’re designed specifically for these kinds of moments.

Make Holiday Weeks Easier on Yourself

You don’t have to plan elaborate lessons or reinvent your schedule to get through a holiday week successfully.

Instead, focus on:

Keeping your routines steady

Using simple, familiar activities

Building in independent work time

Sometimes the best thing you can do—for your students and yourself—is keep things easy.

If you’re looking for an easy, no-prep option to use during those busy days, take a look at the Mini Holiday Books and see how they fit into your routine.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2000" height="2000" src="https://mollylynch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Holiday-Mini-Book-Activity-for-the-Year-Mini-Book-by-Lucky-Learning-with-Molly-Lynch.png" alt="A display of colorful holiday-themed mini-books and school supplies, with text promoting "Holiday Mini-Books for the Year" and "16 Holidays!
There’s just something about summer that makes reading feel extra special. Maybe it’s longer days, slower evenings, vacation travel, or simply having a little more time to sit outside {or inside in the AC!} with a good book and relax. Every summer, I look forward to putting together a list of books that are perfect for this season — the kinds of stories you can’t wait to pick back up at the end of the day.

This year’s Summer Reading List is filled with a mix of page-turning thrillers, heartfelt romance novels, addictive contemporary fiction, and a few books that have been everywhere for good reason. Whether you love a fast-paced beach read, an emotional story that stays with you long after the final chapter, or a book you can finish in a single weekend, there’s something on this list for every type of reader.

Once again, picking books for my Summer Reads list was no easy task. I’ve read over 100 books in the past year, so cutting it down to just a few favorites was definitely a challenge!

I always have multiple books going at once – an audiobook, a kindle read, and a hardcover,—so that’s my secret to getting through so many titles each year! Whether I’m soaking up the sun, driving from one kid camp to another or relaxing inside, you’ll always find me with a book in hand.

Follow Lucky Reads!

Over on bookstagram, I share what I’m reading! Give it a follow, and you can see what I’m currently reading and loving {or not loving!}

Theo of Golden is a heartfelt small-town novel about a quiet man whose simple acts of kindness leave a lasting impact on the people around him.
I don’t even know how to reduce this book down to a couple of lines. It’s a book about grief + books and how healing they can be. Since my dad passed away last Fall, books have been a huge source of comfort for me {well, they always have been, but especially these past months}. Just read it – it’s beautiful!

I kept seeing this book pop up on people’s Instagram, but I was reluctant. The hype is honestly worth it!

I found Heart the Lover to be emotional, beautifully written, and rich in character development. I especially loved the way it explored love, loss, and human connection in such a heartfelt and thought-provoking way. Lots of complicated relationships!

I love it when I find a book that is part of a series. Because once it ends, there’s always another one right behind it! The Lucky Rivers Ranch Series, starting with Cash, is so fun! It’s fun to imagine being on a ranch with these handsome young men 🙂

This is another series and another book I wasn’t sure I wanted to pick up.
The Help is a book that I have thought about for years after reading.
Mary Kay Andrews’ books are always enjoyable summer reads. They are fun, but have a little bit more meat to them than fluffier books I usually read.

If you’ve ever had a student finish a math worksheet in record time and immediately ask, “What do I do now?”, you’re not alone. In the primary grades, worksheets help build fluency, but they don’t always give students opportunities to think deeply or apply what they’ve learned. And with the growing emphasis on problem-solving and reasoning in early math standards, teachers are looking for simple ways to build critical thinking without adding hours of prep.

The good news? You don’t need fancy manipulatives or complicated lessons to help young learners think more strategically. A few small shifts and the right types of activities can gently stretch their brains while keeping math fun and accessible.

Read on for some classroom-friendly ways to build critical thinking in K–2… and how to make it easy on yourself while you’re at it.

What Critical Thinking Looks Like in K–2 Math

When we hear “critical thinking,” we sometimes imagine big, complex tasks. But in the primary grades, it’s actually pretty simple. Critical thinking shows up when students:

Notice and extend patterns

Compare and sort objects

Work through a challenge step-by-step

Explain their reasoning

Eliminate choices based on clues

Make predictions and check their thinking

It’s less about “hard math” and more about giving kids opportunities to think, reason, and talk through their choices—even in small ways.

In my early days of teaching, I always assumed critical thinking was something BIG, but as I’ve taught longer, I’ve realized there are LOTS of ways to sneak in this important skill!

Add Quick, Low-Prep Logic Activities to Your Day

Logic tasks are one of my favorite ways to build critical thinking without adding to my prep load. These activities look like games, which is why students love them, but they require careful thinking.

A few examples you can easily add to your classroom:

Simple picture-based logic puzzles

“What doesn’t belong?” prompts

Attribute sorting tasks

Pattern block challenges

Basic elimination puzzles

These activities work perfectly during morning work, in math centers, or anytime you want students to warm up their brains. A bonus: they build academic vocabulary naturally as students explain their steps (“That can’t go here because the row already has one…”).

Create Independent Math Centers and Early Finisher Choices

If you want something that truly builds independence, logic puzzles are a dream. They’re quiet, self-guided, and help students build stamina without needing constant teacher support.

For early finishers, especially, it’s helpful to have activities that feel like a challenge, not busywork. Logic puzzles check all the boxes:

✅ High Engagement
✅ Easy cleanup
✅ Themed Each Month

I rotate puzzles monthly, but you can tie them to the seasons to keep things fresh. Students start to look forward to the challenge, and you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time.

Support Productive Struggle the Right Way

A big part of critical thinking is allowing students to engage in productive struggle. This is where students learn to persevere {not rush!} and look for clues or patterns to guide them.

You can support this by asking simple prompts during math time:

“What else could work?”

“How do you know that goes there?”

“Can you show me another way?”

“What clue tells you that answer makes sense?”

These open-ended questions push students to verbalize their thinking, which helps them develop confidence and math language skills.

A Simple Tool for Building Critical Thinking All Year: Seasonal Sudoku Puzzles

One easy way to work all of these skills into your day—without spending extra time prepping—is by using picture-based Sudoku puzzles designed for young learners.

The Sudoku for the Year set I created gives students a chance to apply logic, eliminate possibilities, and think through choices in a low-pressure format. Each puzzle uses seasonal pictures instead of numbers, which makes the challenge feel friendly and accessible for K–2 students.

Teachers love using these puzzles for:

Math centers

Early finisher tubs

Morning work

Brain breaks

Partner logic challenges

Sub plans

Digital learning days

Because the resource includes both print and Google Drive options, you can use them in any classroom setup!

Students catch on quickly and start explaining their reasoning without even realizing they’re doing it. The puzzles give them just enough challenge to build confidence and persistence, but not so much that they shut down. It’s the perfect mix.

Try adding one logic activity to your week and see how your students respond.

By the time the 100th day of school rolls around, most teachers are somewhere between excited and exhausted. The kids are buzzing, the calendar is packed, and suddenly it feels like the pressure is on to create a day that’s fun, memorable, and Instagram-worthy.

Here’s the thing, though: the 100th day doesn’t need to be over-the-top to be meaningful.

Some of the best 100th day celebrations are the ones that feel calm, intentional, and connected to real learning—without requiring hours of prep or a trip to five different stores. Let’s talk about how to plan a 100th day that feels special for students and manageable for you.

What Actually Makes the 100th Day Meaningful?

It’s easy to get caught up in the extras {hello hats and crafts!}, but when you strip it down, a meaningful 100th day usually includes just a few key elements:

Reflection – Giving students a chance to look back and notice how far they’ve come

Number Sense – Reinforcing counting, place value, and math skills tied to 100

Movement – Letting kids move their bodies and release energy

Student Voice – Opportunities for creativity, imagination, and sharing

Simple Ways to Hit All Four (Without Overplanning)

You don’t need 12 rotations or elaborate supplies to make this happen. A handful of well-chosen activities can cover all your bases.

✏️ Reflection Through Writing & Drawing

A short writing activity where students document how they celebrated the 100th day or imagine life 100 years from now is powerful. It builds writing stamina, encourages creativity, and creates an instant keepsake that families love.

🤸‍♀️ Movement-Based Counting

Activities that involve counting jumps, claps, hops, or repetitions over a set period {e.g., 100 seconds} give kids the movement they crave while still practicing counting and estimation.

Get those kiddos up and movin‘!

🔢 Math with a Purpose

Using a 100s chart for addition and subtraction helps reinforce number patterns and place value. When math feels like a puzzle or a mystery, students stay engaged without realizing how much practice they’re getting.

🎲 Hands-On Math & Data

Simple activities like flipping coins or rolling dice to reach 100 naturally introduce predicting, tallying, comparing results, and talking about math in a low-pressure way.

Each of these ideas stands on its own—but together, they create a balanced, meaningful day.

A 100th Day Freebie!

After years of trying to do all the things on the 100th day, I realized what I really needed were activities that were:

Truly no prep

Easy to print and use

Flexible for whole group, centers, or early finishers

Meaningful—not just busy work

That’s why I put together a free set of 5 print-and-go 100th Day activities that cover math, writing, movement, and reflection, all in one print & go file.

You can use these pages as part of a center rotation, as a full 100th day plan, or by picking just one or two activities that fit into your schedule for the day.

These 100th Day Activities are simple, calm, and designed to let you actually enjoy the day with your students.

A powerful, haunting read that completely pulled me in. This one was intense, beautifully written, and unforgettable. Easily one of the strongest books I read all year. It was crazy because about 1/4 into the book you think the story should be over but there is SO much more!!!

Sharp, powerful, and thought-provoking. This was a book that demanded attention and delivered something meaningful. It reimagines Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of the enslaved man, Jim and it is serously so amazing. I listened to it (which I highly recommend!) on Libro.fm
