Best Election Books for Elementary Students!

Teaching young students about the importance of voting may seem like a big concept, but introducing it early helps build responsible future citizens. Even though Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are far from casting their first vote, we can plant the seeds of understanding through engaging books that show them how voting works and why it matters!

In this post, I’m sharing some excellent books you can use in your classroom to open up conversations about voting, democracy, choices, and fairness. These books make the complex idea of voting easy to understand and fun for young minds!

Best Books about Voting for Kids & Elementary Classrooms

Make sure to preview whatever book you select from the bookstore or the library to ensure it works for your specific age group and students.

Some of these books include more advanced concepts, while others are simple stories geared toward younger students.

Presidential Elections and Other Cool Facts

This book is packed with TONS of fascinating facts about presidents, the election process, and more. It’s text-heavy so it’s definitely better for 1st grade+ {and ready in small sections, not all at once}

This poetic alphabet book is about more than just voting. It’s filled with social justice and civil rights, highlighting the importance of every vote for children.

This book is so cute! A local school turns into a polling place on Election Day and even though the students are too young to vote, the excitement of the school playing such an important role in the day is contagious.

I Voted

I Voted is a simple book with big lessons. It introduces the basic concepts of democracy in an age-appropriate way for our young learners.

This Little Voter

Heads up – this is a board book so it’s best for the littlest learners. It’s written in the cadence of “This Little Piggy” so it’ll be an enjoyable {but quick!} read for Kindergartners, especially.

I love reading The Questioneers series of books and Sofia Valdez, Future Prez does not disappoint. It illustrates to children the importance of standing up for what they believe in…and how it can make a difference.

Using books to introduce the topic of voting makes it accessible and relatable for young learners. By helping students understand that their voice matters, we are raising future citizens who value their role in democracy.

Bringing Voting Concepts into the Classroom

Once you’ve read these books with your students, it’s easy to set up school elections – for things that are easy for children to vote on – favorite pets, best pizza – you know…all the important decisions in life!
