8 Fun Ways to Practice Spelling Words

Here are 8 playful ways to practice spelling words that will get your students excited about mastering their weekly lists.

1- Spelling Word Hopscotch

Transform your classroom floor into a learning zone! Draw a hopscotch grid, but instead of numbers, write letters in each square. Call out a spelling word, and students hop through the grid, stepping on the letters to spell the word.

This not only gets your kids practicing their words it also gets them up & movin’ {which is just what some of our more kinesthetic learners need!}

2- Spell and Stretch

Another way to incorporate movement into spelling practice is with Spell & Stretch. As you call out each spelling word, have students stand up and stretch their arms above their heads for the first letter, then touch their toes for the second letter, and so on. This is an excellent brain break activity {that also sneaks in some learning!}

3- Rainbow Writing

Give your students a set of colorful markers or crayons. Have them write each spelling in a different color. This not only helps them practice the words but also engages their visual and fine motor skills. Make it even more fun by having them use a different color for each letter of the word!

4- Shaving Cream Fun

Are you brave enough to use shaving cream in your classroom? I’m not BUT you can turn spelling into a tactile experience with some shaving cream from the dollar store. Spray a bit of shaving cream onto each student’s desk or table. Students can use their fingers to “write” their spelling words in the foam.

This sensory activity is great for building words. Bonus: it’s a fun way to get your students to help scrub their desks!

5- Spelling Detective

Turn your students into detectives! Give students a magnifying glass and have them go on a hunt around the room. Hide notecards with spelling words in different spots.

When they find a word, they must spell it out loud or write it down on a spelling paper. This is a great way to mix a scavenger hunt with spelling practice.

6- Play Dough Words

Have students form each of their spelling words using play dough. This hands-on activity is excellent for engaging fine motor skills and allows students to visualize the shape of the words as they create them.

7- Roll and Spell

This spelling practice game is a classroom favorite here in Room 8! Students roll a die and based on the number, they have to spell their words in a specific way.

For example:

  • Roll a 1: Spell it aloud.
  • Roll a 2: Write it with your eyes closed.
  • Roll a 3: Write it with your opposite hand.
  • Roll a 4: Write it in all uppercase letters.
  • Roll a 5: Write it in bubble letters.
  • Roll a 6: Write it in a sentence.

This would be an easy group activity – one person is selected to come to the front of the room and roll the die and everyone does the activity at his/her own seat.

8- Musical Words for Spelling Practice

Similar to musical chairs, play a fun song and have students walk around the room. When the music stops, they have to find a partner and take turns spelling out a word from the list.

Afterward, they can switch partners and repeat when the music starts again. This game keeps the energy high while reinforcing spelling!

Spelling practice doesn’t have to be boring! Plus, by engaging multiple senses and learning styles, you can help all your students master their spelling words in a way that feels more like play than work.
